So, You're Graduating Cosmetology School, What's Next?

So, You're Graduating Cosmetology School, What's Next?

Many cosmetology students might be asking this question as they get closer to graduation and taking the State Board certification exam. But if you are serious about a cosmetology career, you should consider all these steps before you even enroll in beauty school. Most cosmetology training programs are about 7 to 12 months, and that time goes quicker than you realize.

For individuals who are laser-focused on a career in the beauty industry, these are insights you’ll want to absorb and act upon, so you’re prepared to start your cosmetology career with the right momentum.

Know Your End Goals

Having a vision for what you want your cosmetology career to look like will help keep you on the right track through the program. If you want to work in a salon, eventually be a freelance cosmetologist, or something else entirely, this becomes your reason for continuing through cosmetology school and the focus of your efforts.

Make All of Your Learning Mistakes in School

Some of these tips you should embrace early as possible, and one is do all the things that intimidate you in school. Cosmetology school is for practicing techniques while you have instructors to help you. It’s better to face those challenges and anxieties about trying new techniques in the student salon and not with a full price client. Also, don’t be afraid to ask for help – the instructors are there to help you out. The clients who go to the student salon realize you are just starting out and this is the time to build confidence in your abilities.

You’ll Work Hard in Cosmetology School

When you’re in class, you will need to work hard at learning, this is not an easy path to a career. You must earn it with clock hours and applying what you learn in practice and then in the student salon. Cosmetology is a skilled career, and professionals apply themselves in school, and in their jobs every day.

Don’t Fall in the Comparison Trap

Everyone starts at a different point in beauty school. Some students will have experience with certain techniques and some people will be stronger or weaker in different areas. You can learn from your instructors and peers, so realize that no two people have the exact same skill level in all areas. Remember it’s not where you start, it’s where you can finish.

Start Building Your Portfolio as Soon as Possible

The number one tool you will have for attracting new clients is your portfolio of work, which is most often featured on your Instagram account.  It’s best to feature your work on a separate Instagram specifically created for your professional work. Clients will see your work, but you can also show it to salons that will want to hire you. Be sure to use the appropriate hashtags for each hairstyle or beauty technique and any local hashtags that feature your city.

Don’t Settle for Career Paths You Don’t Want

There are always hairstyling jobs you can get that are more mainstream. If you goal is to work at a high-end salon, ask them if you can shadow them one day a week once you get your certification. If your goal is to work for yourself freelance, work on building your portfolio as early as possible. There is always a path to your larger goals, so always keep those in sight.

Your Prices Should Reflect the Market

One thing that is counterintuitive is that you will probably need to attract a brand-new set of clientele once you leave cosmetology school. The clients you have at the student salon will most likely still go to the student salon after you graduate. One reason for this is beauty school prices are different than commercial salon prices. The clients in the rest of your city are used to paying more for professional work, and the clients at the student salon are used to paying student rates. These are two sets of different clients, so be aware. Social media is going to be the best way to get new clients.

Social Media is Crucial for Cosmetologists

People look for a new hairstylist or cosmetologist by looking at photos on Instagram, and other social media, but mostly IG. Take good photos of your best work and tag it correctly. Build up examples of your work as soon as possible. Don’t wait until you are a month from graduating to build a portfolio.

Good Photos are What Sell Your Services

Make sure your phone is up to date, so your camera takes the best photos possible. This can also be a business expense that you write off at the end of the year.

Be Prepared for the Board Exam

The exam for the Board of Cosmetology and Barbering will focus a lot on safety and sanitation. Be sure you know and follow protocols and regulations. There is also some science in the exam, as it relates to body systems and how you interact with clients as a cosmetologist. Remember the State Board must ensure public safety as their prime concern. Lastly, time is of the essence when taking the exam. Be sure to take it quickly after completing the program so you remember what you learned vividly.

Don’t be too stubborn to learn new techniques and styles. As a professional cosmetologist, you will be expected to keep up with the trends and continue improving your skills. This is also how you can get clients, by learning new trends and mastering those techniques. The beauty industry is always evolving, and you must keep pace with current trends and techniques.

Your Education Never Ends

If you see a new technique, go to seminars and classes to learn how to do them. These are investments in your skills, and ultimately your ability to serve clients. You will never stop learning new skills and styles for haircutting, hair coloring, and beauty.

Get Used to Being on Your Feet

When you are a cosmetologist, you spend all day on your feet, cutting and styling hair, applying beauty treatments, and helping clients look their best. Invest in a good pair of comfortable shoes so you have stamina throughout the workday.
