What Do Fortune 500 Companies Look For in Candidates?

If you’re a candidate seeking a new opportunity at a Fortune 500 company, there are specific things for which their hiring teams are looking. There is stability and security in working for large corporate companies, not to mention the experience of working in an enterprise company. If you’re focused on making this goal a reality, we’ve put together a list of characteristics Fortune 500 recruiters are seeking in qualified candidates.

Communication Skills

Working in a large company requires a high level of communication skills, both written and verbal. No matter what position you hold in the team, you must communicate with co-workers, management, clients, and customers. You’ll be expected to give presentations, deliver reports, attend stand-up meetings, and work together with other team members on projects. Your interpersonal skills will help you make a good impression and show you are a capable team member and a valuable asset to the company.

Collaborative Spirit

Collaboration is more than simply working together—it’s working in unison with a balance of ideas, innovation, action, and emotional intelligence. It’s listening to everyone’s ideas and moving forward with the best ones as one cohesive unit. Ensuring the different personalities of the team blend together harmoniously is also part of the challenge. As the old adage says, teamwork makes the dream work, and that’s what hiring managers at the highest level are looking for in candidates.

Culture Fit

Large corporations look for candidates with good culture fit, because this will help reduce turnover, maximize productivity, and keep employee morale high. It’s easier for teams to work together when new employees are able to come in and integrate seamlessly. Are you going to make things more difficult? Or are you going to fit in and be able to contribute as another professional?

Open-Mindedness

On a large team, priorities can shift quickly, projects can be cancelled, deadlines can be changed. Do you have the capacity to refocus and recalibrate to new tasks? It can be frustrating to work hard on a project and have to shift into another one suddenly, but candidates that don’t take work assignments personally, and roll with the punches accordingly are in demand. Keep an open mind when it comes to business decisions and priorities, and always keep an analytical mindset. Company initiatives can change, when a workflow that produces better results appears, be ready to embrace those changes.

Technical Skills and Passion for Learning

The business world moves fast, and technology is always changing and advancing. Enterprise level companies are looking for candidates with the technical skills necessary for the job. “Reskilling” is also an important trait to have—can you learn new skills quickly? Staying adaptable in an ever changing world and having a passion for learning new skills is an asset employers are seeking out.

Critical Thinking and Problem Solving

How well do you define and analyze problems, and come up with potential solutions? Are you able to look at problems from different perspectives and extrapolate different outcomes from implementing different solutions?

Critical thinking and problem solving are always going to be necessary in enterprise-level business. If you have demonstrated your ability to solve mission critical issues in previous positions, list examples of those in your resume and mention those cases during interviews.

Team Organization and Leadership

Have you ever had an opportunity to lead a team? Have you been in charge of a project? Do you have leadership skills? If you can organize a team of people to complete a project on-time, meeting the requirements of the project, and accomplishing the intended goals, that is a highly sought after skill. Think about any leadership roles you have had in past jobs, or any times you were in charge of a team, and responsible for getting results. These are qualities that hiring managers in Fortune 500 companies look for in candidates.

Solid Professional Network

If you’ve worked with other organizations and people in your industry, they will be able to vouch for your talent. What does your professional network say about your skillset? What do others say about you in your references? Do people speak highly of your work and professionalism on social media and reference letters? When you’ve earned the respect of your peers for your work, that speaks volumes about the mindset you bring to a corporate environment.

Work Experience with Another Fortune 500 Company

Having some experience with another enterprise company is a big plus if you’re trying to get hired at a Fortune 500. If you have this experience, list it prominently on your resume or job search profiles. If you have experience at another large company (not a Fortune 500) list that instead. If you can’t get your foot in the door and you are looking for experience, apply for an internship if you can do so. Enterprise companies operate in a different manner than small businesses, and this experience is invaluable.

Updated LinkedIn Account

Many recruiters for Fortune 500 companies look on LinkedIn to find candidates. It’s important to have an updated LinkedIn profile with a professional headshot, your work history, any awards or recognition, and a list of your pertinent skills. Recruiters look for keyword-rich profiles to seek candidates for important positions.

Job Stability

Long gaps in your employment history are something recruiters will scrutinize. If at all possible, try to avoid long employment gaps. It looks much better when your work history is continuous and uninterrupted.

Integrity

As much as you might feel it’s necessary to embellish your accomplishments, authenticity and honesty is always the best approach. When creating a resume or job search profile, be truthful. There are ways to describe your roles in previous companies that highlight your contributions. Keep your integrity and show how you contributed to the team without creating an illusion.
