Benefits of Being a Cosmetologist

Benefits of Being a Cosmetologist

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a cosmetologist? And what benefits there are to working in the beauty industry? Imagine having a career where you find satisfaction in what you’re doing every day, that you’re helping people look and feel their best, and that you’re able to support yourself financially in an industry that will always be in high demand. While everyone has their reasons for being a cosmetologist, there are a few themes that we’ve seen with our current and former Future Professionals.

Doing Satisfying Work and Expressing Your Creativity

One of the main reasons people become a cosmetologist is to express their creativity. If you love experimenting with new hair styles, doing makeup, or doing beautiful nail art, working as a cosmetologist will allow you to express your creative spirit and follow your passion every day.

As a cosmetologist, you can practice new hairstyles, show them to clients, and potentially get industry recognition for your great work. You’ll get to do both bold and subtle effects with hair coloring, create stunning texture with advanced makeup techniques, and turn your clients nails into beautiful masterpieces.

Working as a cosmetologist is like being an artist. It’s a wonderful way to create and share inspirations that come directly from you. It can be a valuable gift to your clients, your community, or even the world. The job satisfaction you’ll get from letting your creativity flow each day will make this career fun.

Flexible Schedules and Work-Life Balance

Many cosmetologists have flexible schedules that let them choose their own hours. This is especially true when they rent their chair and station in a busy salon. If you need to work a typical 9 to 5, or have different hours to maintain a healthy work-life balance, you often have the ability to make this a reality.

Many Different Work Environments

Although we think of cosmetologists traditionally working in a salon, there are other places where professional cosmetologists are needed.

  • Spas and Wellness Centers: Clients are steady and there is a structured environment. They may do skin care and esthetics, or other beautification treatments.
  • Resorts and Cruise Ships: Cosmetologists provide hair care, nail care, and beauty services to guests on vacation in a luxurious setting.
  • Movies and Television: Using advanced makeup techniques, licensed cosmetologists provide theatrical makeup for film and television productions.
  • Freelance Services: Cosmetologists may have their own small business or travel to clients for hair and beauty services.

Career and Entrepreneurial Opportunities

Many cosmetologists start their career working in a salon, building their clientele.  As they gain experience and gain a customer base, they may branch off into more entrepreneurial ventures. Cosmetologists often freelance, working independently as hair stylist specialists for weddings, photo shoots, and private events. Some choose to gain experience and then open their own salon, becoming a full-fledged business owner. This allows them to take a more entrepreneurial role, focusing on marketing, management,  and operations. A handful of seasoned cosmetologists become beauty instructors, beauty influencers, or product representatives. There are many different career paths for cosmetologists to pursue.

Helping Others Through Cosmetology

Most people want to look beautiful and to feel their best. Some need a little help exploring hairstyles and makeup to enhance their look while they build confidence. As a cosmetologist, you’re in a great position to help others by turning their vision for their appearance into a reality.

Cosmetologists are trained to work magic with hair and makeup. They cut, shape, curl and tease hair into incredible styles that make eyes sparkle and faces smile. Makeup applied to a face can appear to lift cheekbones while diminishing the appearance of wrinkles. When you work as a cosmetologist, you’re helping people feel good about themselves, whether they want to experience being softer, more modern, younger in spirit, or more professional.

You Get to Meet New People as a Cosmetologist

How many times have you sat in a hairstyling chair and chatted with your cosmetologist about this and that. If you’re an aspiring cosmetologist, you’ve probably already heard clients tell stories about their life.

Being a cosmetologist is a fun way to interact with others, and to learn a bit more about those who might not walk the same path that we do. Working as a cosmetologist opens you up to experiences and perspectives beyond your own, and it brings you together with others in a relaxing and enjoyable setting.

Achieving Financial Stability (Annual Salary Data)

According to October 2025 data from Indeed [2] cosmetologists in the US made an average mean annual salary of $52,495. In California, according to September information from Indeed, cosmetologists in the Golden State made an average of $59,569 per year[3] over the previous 36 months.

Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics from May 2024[4] shows that cosmetologists in California earned a mean annual salary of $49,540. The BLS shows that hairdressers and cosmetologists in the entire US in May 2023[5] earned a mean annual salary of $ 41,780.

Wages and salaries will vary depending on the state, city, and salon in which you work. Experienced cosmetologists often have a deeper clientele roster, and may earn more from appointments and tips than hairdressers first entering the workforce. Cosmetology is a profession where the potential to earn more is determined by your technical skills, your efficacy at marketing, and your personal drive.

Skilled Cosmetologists are in High Demand

The Bureau of Labor Statistics[6] projects jobs for cosmetologists and hairdressers will increase by 5% between 2024 and 2034, which is faster than average. No matter what the state of the economy, people want to look and feel their best, and you can help them look more beautiful.

Current generations are very self-conscious of their image, and they want to look good so they can feel good about themselves. Hair salons, beauty shops, nail salons, esthetics spas, and wellness centers are all very busy, looking for talented cosmetologists to handle their clients.

Quicker Education Compared to Other Careers

Some careers require two-year or four-year degrees to begin. Cosmetology is a career you can start by completing a training program at an accredited school, and passing the state licensing exam. In a matter of several months, you can start your career as a cosmetologist or hairstylist. Cosmetology school isn’t simple, and you will need to focus and apply yourself, but the rewards are great. You’ll learn all about hair styling, hair coloring, skin care, and nail care, and getting ready for the certification exam while honing your skills in the student salon. Sooner than you think, you can be doing what you love and getting paid for it!
