Are you starting your healthcare career and evaluating your career options? Medical assistants are a vital part of every healthcare facility. The role of a medical assistant is to support physicians and do clinical and administrative tasks that need to be done. This helps physicians give their attention and focus to each patient, delivering a high level of healthcare service. Medical assistants are in demand and there are a wide variety of places you can work as a medical assistant in the Sacramento area. This list will give you an idea of types of workplaces that hire medical assistants in the Sacramento Valley.
Physician’s Offices
More medical assistants work in medical offices than any other type of workplace. Nationally, this is about 57%, according to 2024 data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.[1} Typically, in a physician’s office, the medical assistant will do a combination of administrative and clinical duties. You’ll be setting patient appointments, updating medical records, taking vital signs, preparing examination rooms, collecting samples, and assisting the physician with basic procedures. There are hundreds of physician’s offices in the Greater Sacramento area.
Hospitals
Across the US, about 17% of all medical assistants work in hospitals. In Sacramento, medical assistants may work at Sutter Health, Dignity Health, UC Davis Health Medical Center, Kaiser Permanente, Mercy General Hospital, Methodist Hospital of Sacramento and many other local and regional hospitals. In a hospital setting, medical assistants help physicians and nurse practitioners with clinical and administrative tasks, such as drawing blood (with proper training), taking vital signs, checking in patients and doing triage, changing wound dressings, updating medical records, and stocking and preparing examination rooms.
Outpatient Clinics
There are many different outpatient clinics in Sacramento that are looking for qualified medical assistants. Elica Health Centers, Wellspace, Peach Tree Health, and many others are always looking for medical assistants that can help patients. Sutter Health alone has over 200 walk-in clinics in the Sacramento region. Medical assistants in an outpatient clinic will do an array of tasks, including checking in patients, updating records, taking vital signs, preparing exam rooms, administering injections and EKGs, helping with diagnostic tests, and scheduling patients for follow-up appointments.

Specialized Medical Offices
There are hundreds, perhaps thousands of specialized medical offices in the Sacramento Valley and seven-county area. Whether it’s an office for cardiology, ophthalmology, podiatry, geriatrics, pediatrics, endocrinology, or another field of medicine, medical assistants are needed in many different capacities. Depending on the type of medical office, the medical assistant may do more clinical tasks, more administrative tasks, or an equal mix of both.
Long-Term Care Facilities
There are many long-term care facilities in Sacramento that take care of elderly patients with ongoing or chronic conditions. Many of these facilities have medical staff on-site or on-call to help ensure residents have a high quality of life and prompt medical care. There are several assisted living facilities in Carmichael, Sacramento, Roseville, Elk Grove, and other cities in the region. Medical assistants may help physicians and nurse practitioners with on-site medical care.
Prisons
Believe it or not, adult prisons in California also hire medical assistants. This is due to initiatives to ensure that prisoners have access to timely medical care, as well as dental and mental health care. Medical assistants still do the same type of work they do in a regular medical office or hospital setting, except your patients are prisoners. You’ll still assist physicians and clinicians with clinical and administrative duties, helping the visiting medical team see patients in a timely manner.
Temporary Medical Staffing
In Sacramento, there are agencies that help medical facilities find qualified medical assistants when they have gaps. Nationally based staffing agencies like TrueCare connect medical assistants with medical offices when they need temporary workers for short term fill-ins.
Medical Laboratories
Though this role appears in Sacramento job listings sporadically, this is another type of workplace where medical assistants are sometimes needed. In medical laboratories, medical assistants help with drawing blood (with a CPT-I license) and doing administrative work such as recording results of diagnostic testing.
