Kiandra Johnson
M.S. in Computational and Applied Mathematics, Emory University, 2005
B.S. in Mathematics and Computer Science, Xavier University of Louisiana, 2000
Professor Kiandra Johnson is a Senior Instructor of Mathematics at Spelman College in Atlanta — she lives to see her students have “aha” moments in class.
Kiandra is a first-generation college student and a teacher and a mentor by nature.
A native of New Orleans, Kiandra majored in Mathematics (with a minor in Computer Science) at Xavier University of Louisiana. She then received her Master's from Emory University in Atlanta, with a concentration in Applied Mathematics.
Kiandra began her teaching career at the high school level in Georgia but knew from the time she was an undergraduate that teaching college students, especially first and second year students, was her ultimate goal. She often found herself tutoring and guiding classmates and finding ways to make material relatable (even for friends who weren't Math majors).
She's been teaching for more than fifteen years at Morehouse College, Philander College, and now Spelman College. She also led the Nuclear, Material, and Space Sciences Summer Program at Morehouse for nine years, helping ambitious students develop their interests in mathematics and science and prepare for their college careers.
Kiandra spends most of her time outside the classroom with her husband and son — she also dances, cheers on her New Orleans Saints, and explores the hiking trails around Atlanta.
I'm researching active learning strategies for both in-person and online classrooms. Current college students don't learn the same way generations before them did, and we need to find the classroom strategies that they respond to and that support their learning. So I'm thinking about how to best help each student master the content in any class.
Between teaching and spending time with my family, I don't watch much TV. But, my husband and I have been watching BlackLove (a documentary series on Hulu). We've enjoyed discussing each episode and talking through the different perspectives shared by the couples in the show.
I read daily devotions and affirmations. Most recently, I read a devotion that reminded me that I am strong and have accomplished great things. I try to not only look at what's next to conquer but also to spend some time basking in the accomplishments I've worked hard for and have now achieved. This is something I also try to encourage my students to do, even within their classes.
Shrimp. Anything shrimp! I am like Bubba on Forrest Gump. Being from New Orleans, I was raised on seafood and still love it.
I would explore Data Science, work as an eLearning specialist, or work in corporate training. The latter two are still versions of teaching, just working with different populations. I love to explore different technologies and to help train others on how to incorporate those tools into their work.
Before Covid, I was a Zumba instructor, and I love dance of all types.
